Target audience

Engineers make the world and Hartlepool College of Further Education's School of Engineering makes engineers. Do you want to be the next electrician, electrical fitter or electrical safety technician?

This programme is aimed at school leavers who wish to take their first steps on a path to a career as an electrician in the building services industry and at learners who have completed the Level 1 Engineering programme and wish to progress to the next level of study within the electrical installation strand.

Please note the main qualification is on the route to becoming, but does not make the holder, a qualified electrician.  Further study/assessment is required.

Entry requirements

Prospective learners typically have, at minimum, 4 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including Maths and English or a Pearson BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Engineering.

Alternative entry qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.

Course content

The Level 2 Electrical Installation programme consists of a City & Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificate in Electrical Installation and a mandatory tutorial session.  Learners without a GCSE Grade 4 (or equivalent) in English and/or Maths will be required to complete a suitable qualification in these areas alongside their electrical course.

The City & Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificate has been designed to develop a high level of occupational skills in the field of electrical installation and provide a platform from which learners can progress into an apprenticeship programme, into employment or on to further study.

Learners will complete units covering health & safety, industrial practices, electrical science, electrical technology and the installation of typical circuits and systems.

The mandatory tutorial session will allow learners to interact with their assigned tutor for progress and development, as well as engage with the Hartlepool College of Further Education tutorial programme.

Teaching & Learning

A variety of teaching strategies will be employed in delivering this qualification, dependent upon the unit content.  This may include lectures, seminars, practical work, simulated work environments and group activities.

Teaching and learning activities will take place in a range of specialist facilities, workshops and classrooms.

The programme is delivered on a full-time basis; classes will be taught Monday to Friday.

Assessment criteria

Assessment is at course-level and consists of one synoptic assignment and one synoptic examination.  The assessments are designed to test learners' knowledge and understanding of all the unit content covered.

The overall qualification will be graded between a P (pass) and D* (distinction star), based on the combination of the two assessment outcomes.

Progression

Upon successful completion of the programme of study, together with the endorsement of the course team, learners will hold a qualification that will enable them to progress to Level 3 study and beyond.

Suitable progression opportunities within the School of Engineering include:

  • Level 3 Electrical Installation - (City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Electrical Installation)
Other information

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided to learners for use
in the workshop.
