From Apprentice to Lab Technician

Kensey Robinson

Friends of the college, Hart Biologicals have celebrated the progress made by one of its youngest members of staff, Kensey Robinson. Kensey, 20, joined Hart Biologicals in September 2013 as an apprentice, combining her work specific development at the Hartlepool based company with her knowledge and skills development at the college.

Kensey, the former St Hilds pupil, said: “Science is something I always enjoyed studying and it’s something I was good at, but I never gave it serious thought. My science teacher told me about Hart Biologicals and its apprenticeship placements so I applied through the College. When I first started it was terrifying to be working in an actual laboratory setting such as this. I’d just left school and I didn’t know what to expect from my position here. However, I really loved the work I was doing with the company and it really encouraged me to go on and pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry.”

After completing her three-year apprenticeship, Kensey was offered a full-time position as a Lab Technician with the company. So far Kensey has worked in the manufacturing of blood clotting reagents and has completed her Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities.

Nicole Slater, Production Supervisor said: “As Kensey moved from an apprentice to a technician she has taken on more responsibilities, such as training new starters and completing ‘a train the trainer course.’ She has also completed validation training and has gained experience in the validation of equipment and products. Kensey is an integral member of the team. She always finds new ways to be helpful to other staff and is considered quite the expert in a lot of the biochemistry aspects of her job role.In my time working with Kensey, I have witnessed an extremely wonderful young person thrive in her position.”

Jason Pattison, Production Manager at Hart Biologicals, added:  “I can always depend on her and the experience she has gained in her role really shines through. Starting as an apprentice allowed us to not only to give Kensey training and a firm understanding of general lab techniques and production processes, we were also able to bring her into the team and help her find a natural place within the Hart Bio family.”
