Course content

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with key stakeholders. This ensures that the content is appropriate and consistent with current industry practice to enable learners to enter employment. This is a career-focused qualification with industry endorsement that will enable learners to learn underpinning knowledge, develop technical and transferable skills, and gain experience in a variety of different sections of the esports industry.

Learners taking this qualification will study four mandatory units:

Unit 1: Introduction to Esports
Unit 2: Esports Skills, Strategies and Analysis
Unit 3: Enterprise and Enterpreneurship in the Esports Industry
Unit 4: Health, Wellbeing and Fitness for Esports Players

The mandatory content allows learners to develop their technical skills across the different unit areas, supported by underpinning knowledge, and provides the opportunity for learners to relate these to the esports industry. Further units of study to complete the required study programme hours may include units such as Esports event, Game Design and Ethical and current issues in Esports.

Teaching & Learning

BTEC Nationals require an applied learning that brings together knowledge and understanding (the cognitive domain) with practical and technical skills (the psychomotor domain). During the course of the programme you will be expected to perform vocational tasks that encourage the development of appropriate vocational behaviours and support transferable skills. Transferable skills are those such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis, planning and completing tasks to high standards, which are valued in both the workplace and in higher education.

Assessment criteria

All units in the suite of qualifications for Level 3 are internally assessed and subject to external standards verification.  This means that college set and assess the assignments that provide the final summative of each unit.  This ensures that learners are assessed using a variety of styles to help them develop a broad range of transferable skills.  Learners could be given the opportunity to:

  • present the findings of their own research
  • use case studies to explore complex or unfamiliar situations
  • carry out projects for which they have choice over the direction and outcomes
  • demonstrate practical and technical skills using appropriate processes

Grading decisions are made based on the requirements and supporting guidance given in the units.  Learners must be aware that they may not make repeated submissions of assignment evidence.  One unit is assessed using a synoptic assessment this requires learners to demonstrate that they can identify and use effectively, in an integrated way, an appropriate selection of skills, techniques, concepts, theories and knowledge from across the whole sector as relevant to a key task.
